While we may not have introduce ALL of the staff pets this month, we wanted to introduce one more: Avon. Not to fret, we absolutely will return to this segment at a later date, we “pinky-promise”.
What types of pets do you have?
I have an adorable pet dog named Avon Barksdale. He was found on a reservation in New Mexico when he was under a year old and was brought to the Boulder, Colorado Humane Society where my fiancé, CJ, found him and adopted him. He is a wonderful mutt and we think he could possibly be some sort of herding/cattle dog mixed maybe with a Shepherd or a Doberman. The way he prances around outside we joke that he is a baby deer!
How did they get their name/ nicknames?
I always describe Avon as one of the most emotional and expressive dogs I have ever met. When CJ adopted Avon, he had already been returned twice for behavioral issues. Although he has grown leaps and bounds from his puppy years, Avon still has his little quirks! He because of his battles with separation anxiety he is very needy, but that makes him the most snuggly dog I have ever met. He constantly wants to touch you, lay on you, and sleep right next to you like he’s a human. Did I mention he’s a lanky, 70 lb big boy? It doesn’t ever seem to bother him though, as he thinks he can fit on your lap no problem! He is very smart and playful and loves to go on adventures with us.
How did they get their name/ nicknames?
Avon was named after a character in the TV show The Wire, Avon Barksdale. It was a favorite TV show at the time of his adoption, however, the characters personality in the show is completely opposite from our pups personality and it doesn’t match at all. His name fits him regardless though! We also call him Babaow which is his silly nickname which comes from a joke about a cartoon dog.
What’s one of your favorite memories with your pet?
My favorite time of day with him is in the morning. He makes eye contact with you when you wake up and crawls right up by your head, curls up into a ball, and then plops down basically on your face, snoring and snuggling every morning without fail. We also have gone on some pretty great hikes and camping trips all together.
What’s the funniest thing each of your pets has ever done?
It is also hard to pick the funniest thing Avon has ever done since he is so silly and quite the schemer when he wants to be. He will quickly slink up and steal your spot the moment you get off the couch and then when you return, he looks at you like “what? this is my spot!“. He knows how to open all the doors in the house and likes to sit in our front room on the couch and stare out the window which we joke is “his office”. He has little light brown eyebrows which are very expressive and adds to his character and his silliness.
